Fire Destroys Carriage Home

On November 4th the GVFD crews responded to the report of a structure fire on the north end of the Island near the ferry. The GVFD Duty officer and a medical crew were nearby on another call and were able to be on scene in minutes to knock down the fire with an agressive exterior attack and stop it from spreading to the neighborhood. The duty officer was backed up by several fire engines, water tenders, and our ladder truck. Communications were difficult due to our dispatch system being overwhelmed due to the windstorm. BCAS were also able to respond with the islands backup 2nd ambulance to assist with firefighter rehabilitation.
The fire appears to have started by tea lights being used due to the power outage, and the occupant was able to evacuate in time without injury. GVFD managed to save the larger home but a small studio was a loss. Please keep clear of emergency vehicles as they shuttle water to the scene.
